The Salvation Army flag
The Army flag itself is not
sacred but is a symbol of the beliefs held by Salvationists. The
Army's motto 'Blood & Fire' is also inscribed on the flag.
The blue border represents the holiness of God. The red
background is a reminder of Jesus' blood shed on the cross that
all may live lives free from sin. The yellow star symbolises the
power of God's Holy Spirit.
New corps
officers installed Capt Deon and Major Michelle Oliver and their children, Caleb 11, Giselle 9 and Liam 6
THE Salvation Army Stafford's new corps officers were installed in a special
ceremony during the worship service on Sunday, January 15.
The ceremony was led Major Julie Campbell, the wife of the divisional commander.
The Olivers take command of the corps from majors David and Bev McMurray who
have been re-appointed to a position with headquarter's staff in the Greater West Division in New South Wales as mission and resource directors for corps..
Capt Deon and Major Michelle Oliver have moved from the United States to take up
the Stafford appointment.
The McMurrays had been the COs at Stafford since 2008 after having been moved from Nambour corps on the Sunshine Coast.
Major Oliver said she and her husband had served in a variety of appointments
in the United States since their commissioning in Chicago and marriage in
Vancouver, Canada in 1999 including in corps, at The Salvation Army Training College
for officers in Chicago and now at divisional headquarters level. Capt Oliver is
the Divisional Youth Secretary and Major Oliver the Divisional Youth and
Candidates secretary.
Major Oliver was born in Australia - in Albury on the Victorian/New South Wales
border. Members of her family now live in in Wollongong and Sydney.
Capt Oliver was born in South Africa.
They have three children - Caleb 11, Giselle 9 and Liam 6.
They are soldiers at the Royal Oak corps in Michigan, where the children are involved in the youth sections and activities.
Capt Oliver said the family was excited about the opportunities for ministry and
mission at Stafford and were "eager to embrace the Australian lifestyle and all
that the community has to offer".
